To accommodate overseas visiting pilots who cannot ship their glider to Douglas, we have arranged that various private gliders be available for hire. View what is available below. A South African glider pilot licence validation will be arranged at Douglas after a successful check flight and short test paper. You must have a valid licence and medical from your home country, and this must cover the type that you intend flying at Douglas. We cannot upgrade licences, only validate existing ones. Visiting pilots must have done some gliding in the last few months, and be current on type or similar. If they are aero towing, they will need to be rated on aero tow.
We have strong conditions in Douglas, and only adequately experienced and competent pilots will feel comfortable. The check flight will help you to familiarize yourself with the conditions and area. It is not a training flight. If the Chief Flying Instructor feels that any pilot is not safe, competent or experienced enough, he will not allow him to fly solo at Douglas. We therefore recommend that visiting pilots prepare adequately in their home country before travelling to South Africa, to come fly with us in Douglas
